COURSE PURPOSE

To study education as a social institution; understand the deeper social side of education; to address the various concerns and questions in the education and schooling process which greatly contributes to awareness appreciation and knowing more about sociological issues. To guide the learner in developing a comparative approach to varying global educational systems in the context of contemporary emerging issues

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1.  Develop a sociological conception of education and society.
  2. Introduce learners to the interrelations between the educational institution and other major societal institutions.
  3. Illustrate the social and organizational processes in education.
  4. Provide an understanding of how various countries manage their education.
  5. Illustrate problems and solutions of education in developing countries.
  6. Depict how history, culture and contemporary society affect education.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, a student should be able to:

1.     Develop a sociological conception of education and society.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Definition of sociology; subject areas of study and branches; sociology of education – origin, development and issues; sociological theories of education; process of socialization; social structure and stratification; relationship to education; school and social organization; teachers’ role in school and community; democracy and education. The purpose, history, theories, methods and development of comparative education as a discipline; studies of major contrasting educational systems in the world (such as north America, Caribbean, western Europe, Asia and selected African countries in relation to education in East Africa),  with emphasis on their philosophies of education; organization of education systems, financing of education, curriculum, administration, gender and education, teacher education, technology in education, adult education.
